Podcast #42 - Still In The Game

Listening back to this and I here all the places where I need the song to breathe. I think I'll work on that. The prompt was "Still in the Game" and it brought to mind this perpetual game we play thinking there are winners and losers, that we aren't all the same, that we have to be better or worse than someone to know our place in the world. That's a freakin' lie. And I say this while I am currently competing to be on the stage at Lincoln Center. To me, that's an opportunity, a chance to find a larger audience and NOT some indicator that I'm better or worse than any one of the hard working, talented artists who also have that same chance. Competition is best when it encourages you to be the best of who you are without the need to "beat" someone else. That's really the only way I can look at "contests" and participate. I don't like to feel the separation that occurs with jealousy. I don't want to fear my fellow artists. I want to admire and encourage them because they inspire me and because I could really use that same kind of support. We all could. Theodore Roosevelt said, "Comparison is the thief of joy" and I do believe it can be. Joy comes when you realize the incredible beauty that's in each individual expression of who we are. Something to celebrate.

So, if you haven't yet, this is the last week to vote. I could use your support too! My songs, along with those of the other 9 artists are at the following link. You probably have to scroll around to find my songs "Honest" (video) and "Crazy" (audio only) and I hope you do. I'm really proud of these two. They both really moved me when I wrote them and I hope they move you.

Still In The Game
There's no use jumping ahead
You end up right where you are
Give as good as you get
Everybody in step
All you weapons of war
Come to question in time
maybe you got it all wrong
Do you wake up at night in a sweat
Is the lie of not good enough gone
Not good enough gone

Throw it all away
It all sounds the same
You can make it up again
But who do you blame
When you leave yourself in play
Still in the game

Loathe to decide
You love or you lose
Cause every crooked man
Walks a crooked mile
It’s your burden of proof
Take a long and hard look
At the toll that it takes
Do you wake up at night in a sweat
Does the lie not keep you awake
Not keep you awake

Throw it all away
It all sounds the same
You can make it up again
But who do you blame
When you leave yourself in play
Still in the game

I am open and I am listening
Is that your vision coming through
Still unopened, boxed and broken
Is that your version of truth

Throw it all away
It all sounds the same
You can make it up again
But who do you blame
If you always find yourself
still in the game
still in the game….
